About Chow Chows by Niki Buchen.
Chow Chows will often do and behave exactly as they please, but have an underlying patience and graciousness that is easy to fall in love with. Chow chows are not only predisposed to pemphigus complex, but many are also refractory to treatment; therefore, aggressive treatment was initiated. Chow chows can live in small spaces as long as they get exercise. They can be lazy, so they must be taken on daily walks. Chow Chows are notoriously obstinate and it takes consistent, repetitive training to accomplish anything with these dogs. Owners have to take command in order to keep these dogs in line, but it training has to be tempered in order to be effective. Chow Chow was a slang term applied to the large variety of items carried by these ships. Like a nickname, the term stuck to these dogs. Chow Chows can be trusted around children, assuming that the parents supervise play activities. No large dog should be trusted with a child alone, until it is a certainty that the child will not abuse the dog and that the dog will not play too roughly and injure the child. Chow chows are an ancient breed. Some people think they may have originated in the cold Arctic Circle, from whence traders took them to China. Chow chows are famous and historically relevant because they were probably accompaniments to the Mongolian hordes during their invasions of China, the Middle East, and Europe in the early part of the last millennium. Chow chows are best known as big, red, bear-like dogs with a happy smile and a curled-over tail. They also come in black and cream and both long and short coats.
