About astronotus ocellatus by Niki Buchen.
Info and tips for astronotus ocellatus.
Astronotus ocellatus as originally described appears to be restricted to Peru and Brazil. Astronotus ocellatus was first described formally in 1831. Astronotus is derived from the Greek words “astra” meaning ray and “noton” meaning back. Oscars can be a highly aggressive and territorial fish. Only keep in a large aquarium tank with fish around its size. Oscars are difficult to breed, mainly because it is hard to determine sexes. With the size constraint, it becomes a challenge to raise enough Oscars to be able to watch them pair off. Oscars are a South American fish widely kept in freshwater aquariums. Regular oscars have brown and red markings and in the case of the albino oscar there is red and white patterning.
